Black Friday Shopping

Today is Thanksgiving. Tomorrow is Black Friday. What better time to express my opinion about Black Friday than today? Don't you find it strange that the day after Americans talk about how grateful they are for all they have, they go out shopping for more stuff? I find it rather ridiculous.

Don't get me wrong; I understand people wanting to take advantage of a good deal on something they've been wanting to buy, but what I don't understand is people waiting in line for hours super early in the morning to get trampled by other shoppers in a rush to get one of a few on sale items. People have actually died in Black Friday stampedes! I can't believe people can get so aggressive competing for the chance to buy something (not even get something free) the day after Thanksgiving, or all days! It's madness.

I don't see a problem with Cyber Monday. That you can comfortably do within the confines of your own home. I'm actually a big fan of online shopping because you don't have to get up and go to the store. You can even get free shipping sometimes. The thing I'm not okay with is people taking consumerism to the extreme. Christmas has already become too commercialized. Americans are becoming more and more materialistic and things like Black Friday just feed the fire.

If people are willing to boycott a product that they feel is unethically made, I, likewise, choose to boycott Black Friday by refraining from participation.  I know it won't really make a difference to anyone else, but it allows me to maintain self-respect and helps me to remember to be grateful for what I already have.

  1. It is really interesting how the timeline of Black Friday plays out. Do you think if we didn't have Black Friday right after Thanksgiving, then we would retain that gratitude generated for a lot longer? I haven't really gotten into the whole shopping on black friday thing. I do love cyber monday!

  2. I understand that people want great deals, especially with Christmas around the corner, but it has grown into kind of a monster that replacesThanksgiving! I feel like Black Friday keeps getting pushed up further and further into Thanksgiving. Maybe in a few years it will just be the Friday before Thanksgiving, that would be nice.

  3. Black Friday is the worst. This year was the first year I went and I thoroughly hated it. It is truly ironic how we go from a day of thankful hearts to a day of green and sometimes violence over monetary things.

  4. Jordan and I were JUST talking about this last week. Some stores open at like 6 pm on Thanksgiving Day for Black Friday sales... we can't even get one day free of commercialism. Thanks for sharing!
