The Seeds of Life

What is the value of a seed?
When planted, it will grow.
If neglected, it goes to naught.
The fruit you'll never know.

But what about a different seed
Within a mother's womb?
Think ye it right, its future life,
to sentence to the tomb?

A pregnant woman in a crash,
Whose life is then cut short,
Has also lost her little one,
Yet recognized in court.

To rob a soul the chance to live
Because of carelessness,
Is a truly grievous issue
That we must address.

Thousands of people yearn to adopt,
Their hope for a child not lost.
Though long be the process,
They do it for love and at a high cost.

The giver of life, even God himself
hath not granted power to take.
He's gives and he takes, the Master of all
End not what the Lord doth create.

  1. Did you write this poem? It's really beautiful. I'm currently taking a Family Law class and we addressed abortion for a couple of days. We learned this startling stat: For every 140 births out of wedlock, 1 baby will be put up for adoption, and half of those will be aborted." So sad.

  2. I think this is a fantastic poem that addresses touchy issue very well. I think the argument made in the form of a poem really has a soft tender feel to it, rather than a pointing finger. If that makes sense. Great rhetorical use to point out a key issue. Thank you!

  3. Wow I loved this. You ought to read "Of Souls, Symbols and Sacraments" by Elder Holland! It talks about the sanctity of life, just like your poem. Very beautiful, thanks for sharing!

  4. This is wonderful! I feel very strongly about abortion but realize that it is a delicate issue and that other people also feel very strongly in different ways than me. Like Garrett said, I also think that the use of a poem is very effective in softening the argument but leaves, or even enhances, the power of your argument. Thanks for sharing!

  5. This is a great poem and I can tell that a lot of thought and effort was put into this. I feel very strongly about abortion because my father and all of his siblings were adopted and I am very grateful that all their birth parents decided to put up their children for adoption because I have them a big family because of it. Human life is indeed very sacred.
